DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

The proposal is to establish a Co-operative Farmers Association Known as “Abaral Co-operative Farmers Association” Abaral Farm would represent the nucleus of this Association. Peasant farmers from the five neighbouring villages would be recruited as satellite farmers. Assistance to the villages in agricultural and community development would radiate from the nucleus or “Mother Farm” to adjoining villages. As an engine of growth Abaral Farms would impact in the development of the villages in the following ways:

· Increase and improve agricultural output — introduction of machinery for tillage etc., exposure to use of agricultural chemicals and improvement of farming systems.

· Improvement to road network and assistance with transport and marketing of farm produces.

· Improvement in post harvest handling of crops thereby reducing spoilage and increasing family income.

· Improvement of sanitation — where necessary, drill wells and install hand pumps for clean water and where possible assist in connecting villages to existing water system. Also by educating villagers in construction of pit latrines and in improving sanitation methods.

· Improvement of health by setting up clinics to deal with immediate health problems

· Setting up village schools for children and provide adult education

· Promoting the electrification of villages by connecting to main national grid where possible.
